Say goodbye to harsh, acidic brews. Our coffee is balanced and low-acid for a silky, satisfying cup.

If you start with a bad bean, you'll never get a good cup. We source only high-quality, sustainably grown coffee because bean quality is the foundation of every roast we create.
Each batch is roasted to a specific level to highlight its unique character and derive the best possible flavor and aroma. Our lightest roasts are never too light, acidic nor sour tasting and our darkest roasts are never too burnt, smoky nor bitter tasting.
From the moment the beans leave the roaster, the clock is ticking. To lock in peak flavor and aroma, we package and distribute them immediately, ensuring your coffee arrives as fresh as the day it was roasted.
Coarse Ground Coffee for French Press
The French press method thrives on immersion, where coarse coffee grounds are fully submerged in hot water, extracting rich, full flavors without bitterness. The grind should resemble sea salt. Too fine, and you'll end up with sediment in your cup and a bitter taste. For the best results, always start with freshly roasted whole beans, grinding them just before brewing. This ensures that you capture the peak of the coffee’s natural oils and aromas, giving you a truly exceptional cup.

How to Make the Perfect French Press Coffee
- Measure and Grind - Start with 1 ounce (about 28 grams) of Verena Street coffee beans for every 15 ounces (450 milliliters) of water. Use a burr grinder to achieve a coarse, even grind.
- Boil and Cool Water - Heat water to about 200°F (93°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, let the water sit for 30 seconds after boiling to reach the right temperature.
- Add Coffee Grounds - Place the coarse coffee grounds into the French press.
- Bloom the Coffee - Pour a small amount of water over the grounds, just enough to saturate them. Wait 30 seconds to let the coffee bloom, which releases trapped carbon dioxide and enhances flavor.
- Add Remaining Water - Pour in the rest of the water and stir gently to ensure all grounds are evenly immersed.
- Steep - Place the lid on the French press with the plunger pulled all the way up. Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes.
- Press and Serve - Slowly press the plunger down, applying steady pressure. Pour your freshly brewed coffee immediately to avoid over-extraction.
Why is a coarse grind important for French press coffee?
A coarse grind ensures even extraction and prevents fine grounds from passing through the filter, resulting in a smooth, sediment-free cup. If the grind is too fine, it can lead to over-extraction and bitterness.
How much coffee should I use in a French press?
A good starting point for French press coffee is about 1 ounce of coffee for every 15 ounces of water, or roughly a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio. This creates a rich, balanced brew with enough strength to bring out the coffee’s full flavor.
You can adjust from there depending on your taste. Use a little more coffee for a bolder cup or a little less for a lighter brew. Measuring by weight is the most accurate way to get consistent results, especially if you brew French press often.
If you want a dependable, full-flavored cup, start with the standard ratio and fine-tune it to match your preference.
How long should French press coffee steep?
French press coffee should steep for about 4 minutes for the best balance of flavor, body, and smoothness. This gives the grounds enough time to fully extract without pushing the coffee into bitterness.
If you steep for too little time, the coffee can taste weak or underdeveloped. If you steep for too long, it may become heavy, bitter, or muddy. The right steep time works together with grind size and water temperature to create a clean, full-bodied cup.
For most brews, 4 minutes is the sweet spot.
Can you use pre-ground coffee in a French press?
Yes, you can use pre-ground coffee in a French press, but the best results usually come from whole beans ground coarse just before brewing. Fresh grinding gives you more flavor, aroma, and control over the brew.
Many pre-ground coffees are ground too fine for French press, which can create more sediment and increase bitterness. A coarse grind works best because it extracts more evenly and filters more cleanly through the metal mesh. Whole beans also stay fresher longer, helping preserve the oils and aromatics that make French press coffee so satisfying.
If you want the smoothest, richest French press cup, freshly ground whole bean coffee is the better choice.
Why does French press coffee have sediment?
French press coffee has some sediment because it uses a metal mesh filter instead of a paper filter. That filter allows more natural oils and tiny coffee particles into the cup, which creates the fuller body French press is known for.
A small amount of sediment is normal, but too much usually means the grind is too fine or uneven. Using a burr grinder and choosing a coarse, consistent grind can help reduce excess particles. Pouring slowly and leaving the last bit in the press can also help keep your cup cleaner.
That little bit of sediment is part of what gives French press coffee its rich texture and bold character.
